1. Why a dream needs more than a to-do list
"Learn to play the piano" or "run my first 5K" are real dreams. They are also not tasks. If you put them on a to-do list, they sit there, because nobody can do "learn the piano" at 6pm on a Wednesday.
The gap is distance. A dream is far away, and today is close. Without something in between, you either feel inspired and do nothing, or you plan so much that planning becomes the project.
The fix is not more willpower. It is a few layers that connect the far thing to the near thing, so that each morning you can see exactly how today relates to the dream.
2. The four layers: dream, Mission, goals, actions
TheXinA organizes your dream in the same way our guide to turning dreams into goals does. Each layer answers a different question:
| Layer | Question it answers | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Dream | What do I want, in my own words? | I want to get good at public speaking |
| Mission | What will be true, and by when? | Give a 10-minute talk at a local meetup by 15 May 2027 |
| Goals | What milestones show I am on track? | Write and rehearse the talk by 28 February 2027 |
| Actions | What can I do today? | Draft the opening story (15 minutes) |
In the app, a Mission holds a name, a description, an optional deadline, an estimated number of hours and an optional reward you promise yourself. Goals live inside a Mission, and Actions live inside a goal. Because everything is linked, finishing an action is visibly a step toward a goal, and a goal is visibly a step toward the Mission.
The same example appears on our plan features page, which shows how far the free plan stretches: one dream like this uses 1 of 5 missions and 3 of 50 goals.
3. Build your first Mission, step by step
You can do this in about ten minutes. Pick one dream, not five.
- Write the Mission as a finish line. Add a Mission and give it a name that says what will exist and when. "Run a 5K without stopping by 31 January 2027" beats "get fit".
- Add a short description. One or two lines on why it matters to you. On a flat week, this is the sentence you will want to read again.
- Set a deadline you can revise. A rough date is fine. A date gives the Mission an edge, and you can move it later.
- Add about three goals. Each goal is a milestone that, together, would mean the Mission is done. Give each a name, and when it helps, a start date, a deadline and an estimated duration. Make them SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.
- Add one or two small actions under the first goal. Name each one so you could start it in under a minute, and give it a rough duration. "List three meetups that accept new speakers (15 minutes)" works. "Research meetups" does not.
- Start the Mission. Move its status from awaiting to on going, so it shows up as something you are actively doing.
That is the whole setup. Everything after this is just showing up for the next action.
4. How the layers work day to day
Most of your time in TheXinA is spent on the bottom layer. You open the app, see the actions that need attention, and tick one off when it is done. Small ticks are the point. They are the evidence, in your own handwriting, that you are moving.
Once or twice a week, look one layer up. Is the first goal still the right one? Is the deadline realistic? You can edit a goal or a Mission whenever life changes, and mark a Mission completed, cancelled or failed if that is the honest answer. Closing one is not a defeat, it frees room for the next dream.
If you like working in short sessions, you can also pair an action with the 15-minute rule: promise 15 minutes, allow more.
5. Let your Dreamate write the first draft
A blank form is where many people stall. So you do not have to start from nothing. Tell your Dreamate in chat what you want, even in a messy sentence, and it can save it as a Thought, turn that into a Mission, and add goals and actions for you to look at.
Treat the result as a draft from a friend, not an answer from an expert. Your Dreamate is a companion, not a coach. Rename a goal, push a date, delete an action that does not fit your week. You always choose.
On the free Spark plan you get 100 AI messages a month, which is plenty to draft a Mission or two. The plan features page lists what Ignite and Ultimate add.
6. When this is a good fit, and when it is not
A good fit if
- You have a dream that has been "someday" for a while
- You know the destination but not the first step
- You like seeing small ticks add up to something bigger
- You want a companion to draft, and you want the final say
Probably not needed if
- You only need a quick shopping or errands list
- You already have a plan that works and you follow it
- You would rather not set dates, even rough ones
- The goal is one small task, not a project
One honest note: structure helps you see the road, but it does not walk it for you. TheXinA makes the next step clear, and you still have to take it.
